Connaughton was born at Ballymahon Street, Longford. He worked in Motherwell, Scotland for some time. On his return to Ireland, his brother, a Volunteer in Dublin, introduced him to Tom Clarke who gave him a gun.

Connaughton served in the 1st battalion of the Dublin Volunteers and was in the GPO throughout Easter Week. He was among those who surrendered on Moore Street on 29 April. He was interned in England and then in Wales.

Connaughton would later work as an accountant with Dublin Corporation.
