Michael was born likely in Kiltycreevagh, near Ballinamuck around the 5 December 1898. He was likely the son of Michael Dolan, a farmer and Anne McNamee, but appears to have been largely raised with his maternal family in Drumgort near Legga.

Michael enlisted with the Royal Naval Reserve in 1917, and was initially stationed at the HMS Vivid at Devonport from 30 October 1917, before being transferred to another ship in 1918 before finally joining the HM PMS Cheltenham, a paddle minesweeper craft, on the 22 January 1918. Sadly he went missing from his ship on the 18 July 1918 and was found in Troon harbour a week later.

Michael's sister, Catherine, who was resident in Aghakeeran, near Aughnacliffe, is listed as his next of kin.
