Samuel was born Samuel Edmund at the Edgeworthstown (Meathas Troim/Mostrim) train station on the 12 July 1887. His father, William was the station master at this station at the time. It is uncertain how long the family lived here, but by 1894 Samuel was registered in Castlerea NS and by 1901 the family had moved to the Roscommon train station. Samuel went to school at the former Ranelagh School in Athlone. After school, Samuel lived with this family in Roscommon, where he worked as a clerk.

Samuel emigrated to Canada in May 1911 on the Laurentic and lived in Winnipeg. He married Evelyn Hinde a neighbour of his since his emigration to Winniped, on the 17 Feb 1916 in Winnipeg; the young couple was living with her family at the time of the 1916 Census

He initially enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force on the 30 Dec 1915, and entered the service in Aug 1916, initally serving in the Signalling Base. His battalion departed Canada for England and entered the war in France on the 3 April 1917, likely with the 8th Battalion.

Samuel was killed in action on or around the 15 Aug 1917 likely in the Battle of Hill 70 near Lens (Loos Valley), and is commemorated at the Vimy Memorial
