Patrick was born in Longford, and gave his date of birth as c.1891.

Patrick originally enlisted with the Connaught Rangers Special Reserves on the 8 January 1909, when he was 18 under the name Patrick Kilchriest. At the outbreak of the Great War, he was taken on in the permanent army in August 1914, although it is unlikely he ever saw enemy action, being primarily posted to Cork during his period of active service.

However, prior to the war Patrick had suffered pneumonia and was treated for tuberculosis (TB). In August 1914,he became soaked through in the rain at Crosshaven in August 1914 when he was one of the newly-arrived recruits that wound up sleeping in the rain due to a lack of tents. Within a month he began to become ill with bronchitis and was dischared in Jun 1915 on medical grounds (chronic Bronchitis). He was treated in Peamount Sanitorium for tuberculosis and was later admitted to Cork Military Hospital for bronchitis; he was later transferred to Youghal on in March 1915. He was later discharged and returned to Longford, but developed asthma in early 1917; he died in Nov 1918
