William was born likely in Garvey's Yard, on or about the 4 September 1873, as William Joseph Gilchreest. William had a number of siblings, including brothers Robert and Patrick.

William enlisted in itially with the 6th Rifle Brigade and later joined the Leinster Regiment at Birr in August 1891, serving in both the 1st and 2nd battalions. . During his time with the Leinsters, William served in Malta, Bermuda, Canada and the West Indies, before being deployed to the 2nd Boer War in April 1900 were he served for one year.

He was transferred to the Army Reserves in April 1902 and returned to Longford. We believe he may be the same William Gilchriest that married Maria Teresa Grenan in November 1901 and went on to raise their family in Longford town, and passed away in the County Home from natural causes in 1945.
