| Information: | Stephen was born in the town of Neatham near Alton, Hants, in 1882, and was one of a large family, having four brothers and three sisters. Prior to attesting to the Army Service Corps in August 1900, Stephen was a shoeing smith, and during his time with the army received further training as a farrier and rose to the rank of Farrier Staff Sergeant. He was primarily stationed in Britain or Ireland, and by c.1907 he was stationed in Longford where he re-enlisted to extend his service to a period of 21 years. Stephen married Anna Mary Earle on the 9 August 1910 in St. Mel's Cathedral, and resided on St Mel's Road at the time of the 1911 Census. Stephen was deployed to the Overseas Expeditionary Force to France at the outbreak of WW1, arriving on the 23 Aug 1914. He died in France in 1918 as a result of a aveolar (dental) abcess, with mediastinitis (swelling in the chest) and pulmonary thombosis. However, one document within his record noted cellutitis received as part of active service - it is possible that this was the origin of the infection that caused his death. His wife remained in Longford for a time, before moving to Westdale Road, Plumstead and then Victoria Road, Aldershot
