Information:

Elsie was born Elsie Anna on around 23 July 1894 in Screebogue. She attended Trinity College Dublin and qualified as a medical doctor, according to a newspaper report, gaining her MD for original research into diptheria and scarlet fever. By 1921 Dr. Burns had moved to Liverpool, and is recorded in that year's Census of England and Wales as being a medical officer in the Liverpool Stanley Hospital (available to view on Ancestry, free of charge in Longford Library branches) and eventually became the principal medical officer for the Fazakerley Group of Infectious Diseases in the city, as well as a visiting physician in the city's hospitals.

During WW2 Elsie was serving as a doctor in Liverpool, when in October 1940 a Luftwaffe attack hit the hospital residential quarters; she received a commendation for her actions in rescuing and treating others injured in the bombing raid. 

Elsie was a sister of of Arthur Strong Burns, who participated in WW1.
