William was born in c. 1888, Ardagh Co. Longford. It is unclear where he was during the 1911 Cencus but he returned home by November 1912 to marry Joanne Kelly of Crossdoney, Co. Cavan.

Before he enlisted for the army he was residing at Crenard, Co. Cavan. Pte. Hamilton enlisted in Mullingar, Co. Westmeath. It is likely that William died in action at the First Battle of Ypres.
