Information: | Joseph was born c.1894, the son of William and Mary Hewitt; he had sisters Maria (Rhatigan) and Rose Hewitt and brothers including John Fitzmaurice (Fitzmorris), Thomas, James and Michael. Pte Hewitt enlisted in 1914 in Ballymahon. He was killed in action in Mesopotamia (Iraq), part of the attempted relief of British troops at Kut. |

Notes: | The Commonwealth War Graves Commission records state that Hewitt's mother's maiden name was Fitzmorris/ Fitzmaurice, whilst the Register of Soldiers Effects have her as Morrison. |
