Charles was born the 2 April 1885 in Co. Dublin to a large family of ten children. In his teenage years he worked as a clerk.

Charles enlisted for the army in Dublin, giving Kilcogy Co. Longford (actually Co. Cavan) as his residence at the time.

By 1911 Pte. McConnell was based with the Irish Guards at  St George, Hanover Square, London for the 1911 England cencus.

It is likely that Charles died durning the First Battle of Ypres, a desperate epic fight east of the city of Ypres which finally resulted in stalemate and entrenched warfare.
