Information: Robert was born inLongford on 30 October 1878. Prior to the war, Pte McGarry was employed as an engine driver, and had been made a widower. He enlisted in Helena Vale, Western Australia on in September 1914, but had 6 years experience with the Royal Engineers Volunteers in Scotland. Pte McGarry embarked for the front from Fremantle, Western Australia, on board 'HMAT A50 Itonus' on 22nd February 1915.
Parents Names: Son of the late George and Anne McGarry (née Doherty, later Mrs. Stephenson of Coatbridge, Scotland)
Notes: Robert McGarry's birth was registered in Mullingar in 1878. At the time of enlistment, Pte McGarry gave his mother Mrs Anne Stephenson, 7 Dixon Row, Calder Street, Coatbridge, Scotland, as his next-of-kin. Mrs. Stephenson was married to William, a grave-digger. His alternative next-of-kin was his brother Thomas, who resided with their mother.
