Information: | Arthur North was born in Longford on the 1 August 1871, where his father was serving in the Army. He enlisted originally at Canterbury, Kent, in May 1889. He had a long military career, serving 21 years prior to his first discharge, with service in the Chitral expedition (1895) in Kashmir, India and on the Punjab Frontier (1897-1898). As a result he was awarded Long Service and Good Conduct Medals. North rose through the ranks, attaining the rank of Sergeant in 1906. Arthur married Florence Maude Wilson, from Bow, East London, at Great Ilford on the 18 April 1908. After leaving the army for the first time, he worked at the British Metal Engravery, Kingston-upon-Thames. Sgt North re-enlisted at Kingston-upon-Thames in September 1914 after the outbreak of the Great War. He was later discharged on medical grounds, and passed away in Dover Military Hospital in June 1915. |
Parents Names: | Son of Charles North and Anna North (née Russell). |
Notes: | In the 1891 Census of England, Arthur lists his birthplace as the parish of St. Mary's, Sheerness, Kent, however his birth was registered in Ireland; in the 1911 Census, Arthur's birthplace was mistakenly given as Waterford, Ireland. In the 1881 Census where they were residing at 36 Thornton Road, Charles's wife was listed as Julia, not Anna. Arthur's elder brother, Walter, was born in Hounslow, Surrey. Charles North appears to have also been enlisted with the East Kent Regiment, and served in the Crimean War. |
