Information: | James was born in Clonbroney in 1876 and was a carreer solider that enlisted in the Royal Artillery in May 1898, and within a year obtained his 3rd and 2nd Class certificates in education, and was trained as a gunner and signaller. James intially served in the 2nd Boer War from 1899, gaining medals and clasps for action in the Orange Free State, Cape Colony and others. James married Florence Edith Pearce (?) on the 6th November 1907 in Lewisham. They had two daughters, Phyllis (1908) and Gertrude (1913) In WW1, James was one of the earliest soldiers deployed into battle, arriving in France on the 16 Aug 1914. He was wounded a number of times in the field including a gun shot wound to the head on or around the 17 August 1916 in Boulogne, Nevertheless, James is listed as having served in France for the duration of the war, up to 1919. He steadily rose in ranks from Corporal to Sergeant. He was discharged on the 24 Jun 1919.
