John Thompson was born in Killoe, Co. Longford. A labourer by trade he served a long career in the military enlisting on the 14 Dec 1903 in Longford.

Pte. Thompson re-enlisted in Hamilton, Scotland - likely for war service - where he became part of the 2nd Highland Light Infantry. He was deployed to France and arrived at the front on Aug 1914.
