Richard Thompson was born on 23 January 1893 in Longford, son of Richard Thompson, a mason, and his wife Jane Fayle. He lived in Kingscourt, Co. Cavan prior to enlistment.

Pte Thompson enlisted in Newtownards, Co. Down. He was killed on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.

Notes: Possible entry for Richard Thompson senior at his brother Robert's house in Cavan in the 1901 census, and is recorded as being a widower. There is a possible entry for Pte Thompson at school in Clifden in 1911.
