Joseph was born 30 November 1893 in Cooleeny, just outside Longford town; Joseph's father Michael was also previously a soldier. Pte Ward was killed in action during the Battle of Langemarck, an action of the 3rd Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele).

Parents Names: Son of Michael Ward and Bridget (née Kelly) of Cooleeny, Longford.
