Information: | Lord Granard was born on 17 September 1874. He served in the Scots Guards and later commanded the 8th City of London Regiment. He saw action in the Boer War (1899-1902). In 1914, Granard raised the 5th Battalion of the Royal Irish Regiment. It was stationed in Longford until April 1915. The battalion served in Gallipoli, Serbia, Macedonia, Palestine and later in France. He was mentioned in despatches. Granard went on to hold several positions including deputy speaker of the House of Lords and was a member of the Senate of the Irish Free State. He died in 1948. His twin brothers Bertram Aloysius and Fergus George Arthur also served, with the latter dying of wounds in 1914. |
