Information: | Thomas was born in Longford. He enlisted in the Connaught Rangers in Galway in August 1914. His battalion sailed for Gallipoli, Turkey, on 9 July 1915 and landed at Mudros on Lemnos Island, Greece on 16 July. It proceeded to Anzac Cove, Gallipoli on 6 August and remained there until 29 September. Thereafter, it returned to Mudros. The next pase of Thomas's sctive service was on the Salonika Front, where he arrived on 10 October. He was wounded and taken prisoner by the Bulgarians at the Battle of Kosturino, Macedonia on 7 December 1915. He was in a P.O.W. camp at Vratza, Bulgaria in July 1916. Later, he was released and sent home. |
