Information: | John was born in East Hill, Queenstown, (Cobh) County Cork to John Barry and Ellen Hallissy on or around the 21 July 1887. John enlisted with the British Army, and by 1909 was stationed in Longford. He married Gertrude Murray in Longford in 1909 and all their children were born here. John is listed as a Lieutenant Corporal in the 1911 Census. According to his obituary, John eventually rose to the rank of Major. During World War 2, or The Emergency, he was a leader in the Local Security Force, later the Local Defence Force. John was also involved with the Longford branch of the British Legion. Outside of the military, John worked for the Prudential Insurance Company. John died in June 1966 and is buried in Ballymacormack Cemetery, Longford. |
