John was born c.1871 in County Longford. He married on the 21 Jun 1902, but was a widower at the time of his enlistment. 

John enlisted with the Royal Engineers at Fleetwood in Oct 1915. He entered the war on 28 Oct 1915 and received the1914/15 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal; he was demobilised in Mar 1919.
