Information:

Charles Patrick Carroll was born on, or around, the 10 March 1889 in Stokers Yard, Longford; Charles's father, William, was listed as a Private soldier at the time. Prior to the Great War, Charles was working as a hostler, likely at The Longford Arms Hotel.

Charles enlisted with the Connaught Rangers Reserves in April 1912 at Boyle, Co. Roscommon, giving his age as 20. He was mobilised for the Great War on the 6 Aug 1914 and entered the war in France on 4 Nov 1914. During his overseas service Charles served in France from Nov 1914 - 15 Dec 1915; Home (Britain or Ireland) to 3 Feb 1916; India 4 Feb 1916 - 6 Apr 1917 & 4 Aug 1917 - 16 Dec 1917; Mesopotamia (Iraq) 7 Apr 1917 - 3 Aug 1917 & 17 Dec 1917 - Apr 1918; Egypt 2 Apr 1918 - 19 Feb 1919. During his time in Mesopotamian (Iraq) Campaign he received gun shot wounds to the head and chest. He was demobilised in April 1919, leaving the Reserves in Mar 1920, and gave St. Michael's Road in Longford as his address. However, he later moved to Yorkshire, UK, and began drawing his pension there in October 1920.

From some of his pensions records he appears to have moved between larger towns in Yorkshire, likely gaining work at the foundries and mills that were still dominating those towns in the 1920s. It appears he married Kathleen E. Gordon in 1940. By 1938 Charles was settled at 18 Guard-house Avenue, Keighley, where he remained until his death in 1949.
