Joseph was born c.1882. He was a career soldier, having enlisted in 1904.

After WW1, Joseph was discharged in June 1919.  His pension records note his address as Cloontuskert, which is in Co. Roscommon but post was sent as care of Lanesborough Post Office. He received the 1914 Star and the British War and Victory Medals.
