Information: | John William, also known as William in army records, was born c.1892. There is a suggestion that he was possibly from Drumlish. A William Brown(Byrne) is listed in the Hussars in the 1911 English census (aged 19). William entered the war on the 11 Nov 1914, and received the 1914 Star as well as the British War and Victory Medals. It appears he remained in the British Army after WW1, as he received a medal for general service with clasp in c.1923 for service in Iraq.

Notes: | It is possible this is the same William Byrne from Drumlish that originally enlisted with the 2nd Connaught Rangers (Reg. No. 9703), in July 1909, but was discharged as it was felt he gave a false age. This William's family were: William (father), Ellen (mother), John, Paddy, Thomas (brothers) and Anne, Bonnie, Maggie, Tessie (Teresa), Lizzie (sisters). This may be the same family that were listed as Beirnes in the 1901 and 1911 Census in Drumlish town. There is some suggestion that William may have been married to a Margaret Collwell. |
