William was in 1889 in Co. Longford, and is a brother of Bernard who also served in WW1. By 1901 the family was living in Dumbarton, Scotland

Prior to the war, William was a shipyard worker. He married Ethel Travers in 1914 in the Scottish town of Alexandria, and had two children during the war period, Hugh and Mary Gillen, the latter of whom sadly died during this time. 

 

William enlisted for war service in November 1915 and was posted to the Expeditionary Force in France in April 1916. He was recorded as being wounded in action on the Oct 1918, and is noted to have received gunshot wounds to the head, leg and arm. (War Office Daily List No.5724, sheet 41 of PDF). He returned to Britain in February 1919 and was discharged from the army.
