Information: | Army record show Thomas born in Lisryan in 1865 and that he was fifty when he enlisted. A/Cpl Wheatley, did however have military experience, having served 31 years in the Royal Irish Lancers and the Irish Constabulary previously. After retirement from his first period of military/police service, Thomas was working as a horse carrier (driver). Wheatley re-enlisted in July 1915 and transferred to the ANZAC police corps in April 1916. Wheatley served overseas on the Eastern Front, at Maadi, Abbassia and Port Said and Cairo, earning the 1914/15 Star, British War and Victory Medals, prior to discharge in February 1918. Thomas was married to Mary Wheatley. |
