John's brother, Patrick, appears to have served with the Royal Irish Fusiliers. Pte McHugh enlisted on 18 September 1914, on what was his 26th birthday, but did not have any previous military experience. McHugh primarily served in France, and may have died near Ovillers on the 15 July, during an attempted push on the line at the village.
