Information: | John was born in Longford in September 1888. He was the son of Bridget, and had a brother, Patrick, and a sister, Rose; John's father died in 1889. John's brother, Patrick, appears to have served with the Royal Irish Fusiliers. Pte McHugh enlisted on 18 September 1914, on what was his 26th birthday, but did not have any previous military experience. McHugh primarily served in France, and may have died near Ovillers on the 15 July, during an attempted push on the line at the village. |
Parents Names: | Son of Bridget McHugh, Longford |
Notes: | One of John's army records states that his brother and sister shared the surname McKeown, but they were all full-brothers and sister. His mother Bridget was at various addresses including 1 Healy Terrace (his will, 1915), Stafford's Yard (1917) and Chapel Lane/Street (1919). |
