Information:

John Was born in Longford in 9 January 1894, one of ten children of Thomas and Mary Dowd. He married Rose Regan in Longford in August 1913,

Pte  Dowd enlisted in Boyle with the Connaught Rangers Special Reserve on 18th January 1911, and attended their School of Musketry in Dublin. During the Great War, he served at home (Ireland/Britain) until he was deployed to Mesopotamia in June 1916 where he remained until April 1918, when he was transferred to Egypt. Just prior to the outbreak of the war he was made a Corporal in July 1914 and then was promoted to Sergeant in February 1915.

After WW1, John served on Longford Urban Council for a number of years, also involved with British Legion Branch Longford.

He died in June 1957, and is interred in Ballymacormack Cemetery.
