Kathleen was born Catherine Louisa Doyle on the 12 February 1899 in Ballinascraw, the youngest daughter of John and Lizzie Doyle.

Kathleen became a volunteer nurse with the Joint War Committee Volunteer Aid Detachment (J.W.V.A.D.) at the Queen Mary Royal Naval Hospital in Southend-on-Sea in July 1918 and remained there until June 1919.
