Thomas was born in Co. Longford c.October 1892.

He enlisted with the Connecticut National Guard in June 1917 and remained with them until 3 December 1918. Then, he appears to have been with the Prisoner of War Escort Company in the American Expeditionary Force until his discharge in February 1919. During his service Thomas received a number of promotions, first to Corporal in September 1917, then Sergeant in September 1918 and then to Sergeant First Class in December 1918.
