Information:

Matthew was born c.1872 likely in Loughill*. Prior to the war Matthew worked as a coalminer in Scotland. Matthew married Annie Mc[?] on the 11 June 1904 in Glasgow. They had four children: Annie, William, Elizabeth and Matthew, who was born shortly before the outbreak of war.

Pte Mahady enlisted for war time service in Hamilton, Scotland on the 23 July 1915 with the 2nd Battalion, being placed on escort duty with the W Company in September 1916; he was later transferred to the 1st Battaltion, where he was made Lance Corporal in 1917. Matthew then transferred to the 3rd Battalion prior to discharge in 1918 where his rank returned to Private. He served both on the home front (Britain/Ireland) and on the western front in France, where he was deployed for 1 year and 99 days from August 1916 to December 1917. During his service, Matthew had attained a qualification of bomber (trench mortarman). Matthew was discharged in May 1918 on medical grounds** and received the Silver War Badge (No. 391132). 

Matthew died in Scotland c.1942 at the age of 73.

Parents Names: Possibly the son of William Mahody and Annie Cahill, Loughill.
Notes: *Matthew gave his birth year as c.1876 on enlistment, however there is a suggestion that his actual date of birth was c. 1st March 1869. . **Ryalgia is noted on his pension record; this is an older name for muscular rheumatism. ***Written as Mahaddy on his pension index.
