William was born William Patrick Martin, around the 18 March 1873* in Ballymahon; his father Francis was a soldier who is believed to have served in the Crimean War. William later emigrated to the US and enlisted in the US Navy c.1892.

William married Frances Lincoln Studley of Woods Hole, Falmouth, Barnstable Mass. on the 25 November 1907. They had one child, Elinor, born in 1915.

He served 27 years in the US Navy, and retired on the 2 August 1915. William died of cardiac illness in Portsmouth Virginia in 1919. 

 


William's brother, Frank, also served in the US Navy, and rose to the rank to Lieutenant Commander; he resided in Quakertown, Pennsylvania.
