Kathleen was born in Templeton, Killashee likely about 29 Dec 1919 at Glenmore, near Kenagh, although the family had likely moved to Templeton, Killashee by 1921. She emigrated to Australia with her family on the SS Berrima in January 1927, including her brother William and younger siblings, Elizabeth, Hubert and Nicholas.

Prior to World War 2, Kathleen worked as a companion (likely a lady's companion). She enlisted on 30 Sept 1942 with the Army Citizen Military Force within Operational Security. She initially served as a Signalwoman before her rank being changed to Private. Kathleen was discharged in June 1946

Katherine married Sydney William Garvey in April 1946.

Her brother Pte William Keena also served with the Australian military in WW2.
