Information: | Bernard, brother of William Bannon, who also served in the war, was born in c.1884; it is uncertain where exactly he was born. In the 1901 Scottish Census he states he was born in the USA, however in his army attestment he may have been born in Longford. His family were living in Co. Longford by 1887, where Bernard's younger siblings, were born. By 1901 the family was living in Dumbarton, Scotland Bernard enlisted in 1901 in Scotland. It is believed that this is the same Bernard Bannon from Co. Longford, Ireland, that enlisted with the West of Scotland Artillery SDRA at Glasgow on the 13 February 1901, at the age of 18 (link is to Fold3.com, a paid subscription site). During WW1 Bernard was with the Royal Field Artillery, entering the war in France on the 29 July 1915, for which he received the 1915 Star, in addition to the British War and Victory Medals. |
